    Gwalior Fort is a hill fort and it has existed at least since the 10th century. The inscription and Monuments found within what is now the fort campus indicated that it may have existed as early as the beginning of the 6th Century. This fort has been controlled by some rulers in its history.

    The period of Gwalior Fort’s construction is uncertain. The fort was built by King Suraj Sen in 3 CE and he was cured of leprosy When a sage whose name was Gwalipa offered him the water from a sacred pond. So the king constructed a fort and named it after the sage.

    So it’s the main history behind this place.

    Inside/Outside Views

    The fort is well maintained and houses many historic Monuments including palaces, water tanks, and temples. This place covers an area of three square kilometers and rises 11 meters and its rampart is built on the edge of the hill connected by six bastions or towers.

    In this, for there are two gates, the northeast side with a long access ramp and another one is southwest.

    The water tanks of the fort could provide water to a 15000 strong garrison and the number required to secure the fort.
