    The famous Kalatop wildlife sanctuary which is also known as the Kalatop Khajjiar Sanctuary is located in the picturesque hilly Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh in India. It is one of the most pristine destinations in Himachal Pradesh. The word “Kalatop” means ‘black cap’ which refers to the black forest cover on the highest hilltop in the sanctuary. The thick black forest, snow-capped mountains, a plethora of wildlife, and the stems of fresh water make this place mesmerizing. This makes this place very attractive to visitors.

    Besides the gorgeous view of the place there are many more things which make this place attractive to the travelers. 

    Trekking: 

    A good number of tourists undertake the trekking from Dalhousie to Kalatop sanctuary. The trekking experience here is something very different and amazing.

    The view of the sunset from the top of the sanctuary is breathtaking. It will be a lifetime experience for you.

    Adventure park:

    There is a little adventure park inside the sanctuary and it is a perfect place for the kids.

    History

    Entrance to Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary under the forest department of Himachal Pradesh.

    During the period of princely states under the British Raj, this place was famous for hunting and sporting grounds. During the early 1960s, the area under the Kalatop wildlife sanctuary was a natural reserve but the efforts to protect this place were taken during the 1970s when it was declared as a sanctuary.

    The Kalatop Wildlife sanctuary is full of lush green surroundings and snow-capped Himalayan peaks. This place is at the top of the destination list for a lot of travelers. This beautiful place is situated a few kilometers away from the Chamba dam and Chamera reservoir on river Ravi, which is known to be rich in flora and fauna. One can find many small freshwater streams flowing into the river north of the sanctuary.

    The Kalatop wildlife sanctuary is open every day of the week from 7 am to 6 pm.

    How to Reach

    By air: The nearest airport to Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is Gaggal in Kangra. It is well connected with the other cities in the country. From the airport, you can take a cab to reach the place easily which roughly takes 4 hours.

    By train: The nearest railway station to this place is about 80 km away from the sanctuary and situated at Pathankot. It is also well connected with the other main cities of the country.  

    By road: Chamba is well connected with the other cities of the country by roadway. So, if you want you can go there by roadway.

    Tips for Travellers

    1. Be careful of the bears 
    2. To visit this place you need to take permission first from the District Forest Officer, Chamba for Vehicle entry.
    3. Carry a water bottle with you and some essential things.
    4. You can easily hire a taxi at Dalhousie if you want to sightsee around.
    5. There are no guided tours offered by the forest department.
