    History

Kavaratti Lighthouse is one of the major Lighthouses built in Lakshadweep, a group of islands. On 20th May 1976, a DA gas light on a wooden trestle was built considering the gradual increase in sea traffic. After that, in 1984-85, construction of the present 38-meter-high RCC tower was taken up and completed in 1988. On 28th October 1988, the DA equipment was replaced, and PRB-42 equipment was built inside a lantern house. To improve the performance of the light, the PRB -42 was replaced with a cluster of Metal halide lamps as an illuminant. Finally, on 14th February 2002, the improved light was used in the Lighthouse.

    Inside/Outside Views

The 38-meter RCC tower was built to replace the old wooden trestle structure. Inside the Lighthouse, many spiraled stairs lead you to reach the top and enjoy the attractive view. It has a control room & also a generator room. The authorities painted the Lighthouse red and white to enhance its visibility during the day. Inside the Lighthouse, there was PRB-42 equipment that provided powerful light sources. There is also a lantern house at the top of the tower, which contains light devices. These light helps to maintain the ships and boats properly in this region. Overall, it has architectural and historical significance.

    How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport. It receives flights from several cities in India and even abroad. Lakshadweep has just one airport on Agatti Island. Air India flights from Cochin reach Agatti in one and a half hours. These operate six days a week.

By Road: As Lakshadweep is made up of a group of islands, it’s not possible for someone to travel from one to another by road. The only option is by boats and ferries or helicopter services.

By Rail: Lakshadweep is an island 300 km off the coast of Kerala. So, there is no Rail connectivity to Lakshadweep.

From October to May, boats are available from Agatti to Kavaratti and Kadmat during the fair season.
