    History

The history of this Temple is quite interesting. More than 500 years ago, Madhavendra Puri was going to Puri for his lord Shri Gopal to get some sandalwood. A few days later, in Navadvipa, he went to Odisha. After some days, he reached Odisha, where Gopinath is situated. After seeing his lord, he was very happy. From the corridor of the Temple, Puri asked the priest what types of food they offered to lord Gopinath. The priest replied that we can offer similar foods to the lord. Then he explained every single detail about the food. The priest said that, in the evening, the lord was offered sweetened condensed milk in 12-13 pots. It was named Amrita Kell and was not offered anywhere in the world. Then he asked the priest if he could get some kheer given to him before he offered the lord. Because he wanted to give the same Kheer to his lord, he immediately realized his mistake. He desired to eat that Kheer before offering it to the lord. Thinking that, he left the place and went to a closed marketplace, sat there, and began to chant. After finishing the puja of lord Krishna, the priest rested. In his dream, he saw that Gopinath told him to get up, take the pot of Kheer under his garments, and give it to Madhavendra Puri. Then he got up, take the kherra and brought it to puri and said him, that ‘There is no one fortune like you’. That’s how gopinath got the name ‘Kshira Chora Gopinatha’. ’Kshira’ means condensed milk and ‘Chora’ means theif. The Temple remains crowded all over the week, but on special days, it becomes more crowded. This  temples attracs thousands of devotees everyday.
