    Kumbhavurutty Falls is a popular tourist destination which is located near Aryankavu Panchayath in the district of Kollam in Kerala, India. It is very close to the Tamil Nadu borders. The waterfall is a part of the Achankovil River. It is an ideal spot for nature walks, photography, and picnics.     At the base of the waterfall, there is a natural pool of water where the water collects. The sight of the pool surrounded by rocks and vegetation. It provides an enchanting view of the waterfall. The rocks around the pool are often slippery and wet. Swimming in the pool is not allowed due to safety concerns.
    The water gives a breathing atmosphere with the sound of falling water and the beauty of nature. From the top, the water finds its way through small and big rocks. You can see many steps here, cut into the rocks which lead visitors to the top of the waterfall. If you reach early in the morning you can enjoy it a lot.
    Near the waterfall, there are another two major waterfalls which are The Manalar Waterfall and The Palaruvi Waterfall. After visiting Kumbhavurutty waterfalls you can also visit nearby waterfalls. Overall this waterfall is an ideal spot for visitors.

    History

    Kumbhavurutty Falls is situated in the dense forest of Thenmala. Thenmala is one of the oldest forest areas. The name Kumbhavurutty might also hold cultural importance, with “Kumbha” which means ‘pot’ or ‘vessel ‘ in Malayalam. It refers to the shape or the way the water gathers in the basin below the falls. The waterfall is named after the river Kumbhavurutty.
    The waterfall is around 100 meters tall. It flows from a great height and crashes into the pool below, creating mist and a natural spray in the air. The vibrant color of the water poured from a height of 25 meters. At the place, Kerala Forest Department has started an Ecotourism center.

    How to Reach

    By Air: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is the closest airport to the waterfalls which is approximately 99 km away. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or book a private car to Kollam. The drive will take 1.5 to 2 hours. From Kollam, you can take a cab or local transport to reach the falls.

    By Train: Aryankavu Railway Station is the nearest station to the waterfalls which is about 35.1 km away. From the station, you can take a local bus or hire a taxi to Achencoli/ Rani. From here you can take a taxi to reach the Waterfalls. 

    By Road:  Kollam is well connected by road. From Kollam, you can start your journey to various cities. Aryankavu Bus stand is near to the waterfalls which are about 36 km away. From here you can take a private car or hire a taxi to reach the waterfalls.

    • Wear comfortable footwear as you will have to walk quite a lot.
    • Plastic, shampoo, and soaps are not allowed in the waterfall. 
    • Carry water bottles and snacks. 
    • Avoid swimming in deep water.
