La Martiniere is a school situated in Lucknow, the state capital of Uttar Pradesh, five km from Lucknow Junction. It is one of the most important historical sites in Lucknow and one of the most well-known educational institutions in India. It is located on Kalidas Marg. Major General Claude Martin’s legacy allowed for the founding of La Martiniere College in Lucknow in 1840. The college is made up of two campuses with separate schools for boys and girls. La Martiniere Girls’ College was formed in 1869, and La Martiniere College (for boys) was founded in 1845. Because of its involvement in defending Lucknow during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, The Boys’ College is the only educational institution in the world to have received royal combat decorations. Additionally, the college is mentioned in Rudyard Kipling’s book “Kim.” The school’s architecture and history make it a popular tourist destination. Major General Claude Martin, a French explorer, founded the La Martinière family of educational institutions, which includes the two colleges located in Lucknow. In Lyon, there are three La Martinière Colleges, while there are two in Kolkata. La Martinière offers a liberal education, with English serving as the primary language of instruction. Children of all religious denominations are welcome to attend the schools, which serve students from the age of five to seventeen or eighteen. The boys’ school was founded as a non-denominational institution and features a chapel, a Hindu temple, and a mosque on its grounds. In contrast, the two La Martiniere Schools in Calcutta are Christian institutions run by the Anglican Church of North India. Both day students and residency scholars’ borders are offered by the schools. Claude Martin, a former French soldier who became an architect, created the structure known as Constantia in 1796. It is regarded as one of the best examples of a funerary monument in Europe. It combines indigenous architectural elements of Hindu and Mughal architecture with elements of Italian architecture. The La Martinère School building, which has certain architectural characteristics, including carved arches and elaborately sculpted balconies, is home to the burial of Claude Martin, the French Major-General of the time. In addition, there is a library, a chapel, and a lovely lobby area located within this European-style building.

    Attraction

Renowned for its rigorous academic program, the college has produced noteworthy alumni in a range of sectors, such as commerce, politics, the arts, and sports. Its expansive campus, verdant surroundings, and historic structures all contribute to its allure and establish it as a well-known landmark in Lucknow. The college’s attractiveness is further increased by its extensive extracurricular program and active student body.

    History

Major General Claude Martin, a French explorer and army officer in the British East India Company, founded La Martiniere College in Lucknow in 1845.La Martiniere College

Originally intended as a boarding school for the boys of Anglo-Indian and European soldiers and citizens, the college was formed. It is a component of the educational network Major General Claude Martin, a French explorer, established. There are two La Martiniere Colleges in Kolkata and three in Lyon, France, as part of the network of educational institutions. A refined soldier, Major Claude Martin grew indigo, constructed mansions, piloted hot-air balloons, and kept a harem. He made the first scientific maps from Assam to Awadh while he was in Awadh, winning the respect and influence of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula. He constructed famous buildings in Lucknow like Chattar Manzil and Bibiapur Kothi. General Martin, who passed away in 1800, left a bequest that included the La Martiniere schools. Only in 1845 was the establishment in Lucknow finished. Due to the extraordinary achievements and bravery of its staff and students during the First War of Independence’s historic Siege of Lucknow in 1857, the educational institution holds the rare distinction of being the only one in the world to have been awarded royal combat honors.
