    History

Maa Sheetla Devi Temple, or Chaukiya Dham, is about 400-500 years old. According to history, during the Hindu ruler’s Era, Ahirs was the governor of Jaunpur. Heerachand Yadav was the first ruler of the Aheer dynasty. They worshiped Sheetla Devi as their clan deity. Maa Sheetla Devi Temple Jaunpur, Uttar Prades

But according to some people, Chaukiya Dham was built by Bhars. Bhars was the worshiper of Shiva and Shakti. They have an interest  in water bodies (ponds). A pond in the temple premises increases the possibility of building this temple by Bhars. The history about building this temple is not so clear actually. It is believed that they first set a Chauki and then set the idol of the deity. That is why it is called Chaukiya Dham. According to the religious view, Devi Durga transforms herself into Katyayani to slay all the demons. A demon named Jarasur spread diseases. People started to suffer from illness. There were cries all around. Then Devi Katyayani took her Sheetla form, slayed the demon and provided blissfulness.
