    Madikeri Fort is a small and beautiful fort situated in the majestic city Madikeri, in Kodagu district, under the state of Karnataka, in southern India. Another name for Madikeri fort is Mercara fort. It is an interesting place for sightseeing in the city. Many people come to visit this place every year. It is located at the center of Madikeri city and is a historical landmark for the city. The structure of the fort is gorgeous. 

    Attraction

    There is no argument about the fort.  There are two elephant statues made of stone in the fort at the northeast entry and a church in the southeast corner of the fort. The soldiers of the East India Company constructed the church in 1859. There you will find a Ganesh temple also. There is a museum established in the fort which displays artifacts and weaponry from the time of the fort’s construction and British rule. They also installed a grand clock tower in the fort in 1933. It is said that the fort has few secret passageways which is a mysterious thing. 

    History

    Madikeri Fort, Coorg the entrance stands the majestic sculpture of horses erected on the entrance wall.

    Madikeri Fort was first built by mudduraja in the 17th century and it was rebuilt and restructured by Tipu Sultan. This site was renamed Jaffarabad. It is one of those forts which were built or rebuilt during the reign of Tipu Sultan. Dodda Vira took the control of the fort in 1790.  In 1834 The British made some addition to the fort. Now, this is controlled by the government of Karnataka, and the premises house of the fort is used as Madikeri Deputy Commissioner’s office.

    Madikeri fort opens every day of the week except Monday. It opens at 10:00 am and closes at 5:30 pm.

    Entry & Others Fees

    A visitor does not need to pay any entrance fee to visit Madikeri fort. As it is free for all. But if you want to visit the museum then you have to pay a little amount. It is RS. 5 for children and RS.10 for adults (per person).

    How to Reach

    By air: There is no airport in Madikeri city. So you have to go via Mangalore International airport which is the nearest airport to the city. It is about 141 km away from Madikeri fort. From there you need to hire any local transport to reach Madikeri fort.

     

    By rail: Madikeri does not have any railway station also. The best way to go there by train is by the Mangalore railway station. Which is situated at a distance of 134 km away from the fort and the closest railway station. It is well connected with the other cities of India. At the station, you can find taxis and cabs. By hiring them you can reach Madikeri fort easily.

     

    By Road: The city of Madikeri is well connected with the other cities of Karnataka by road. Several public buses can be found there which connect the city with Mangalore, Mysore, Bangalore, etc. So, you can easily go there by road. And this place is situated near the Madikeri bus stand
