    Situated at a distance of 20 km from Chandigarh, Chhatbir Zoo is a zoological park situated on the Chandigarh-Zirakpur-Patiala route close to Zirakpur, India, initially called Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park. This zoo is one of the largest zoological parks in North India and one of the most famous and most visited places in the city of Chandigarh, India. The wildlife animals roam here freely. And it belongs to around 103 species living in over 100 enclosures. The great Royal Bengal tiger, Lion reserves add extra attraction to this place. You can see them from a very close distance and have an unforgettable experience here. In the season of winter, many migratory birds come to this place.     History

    Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park was inaugurated by the then-governor of Punjab Mahendra Mohan Chaudhary, in 1977 and it was named Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park. At that time it was populated by a small number of animals brought from Guwahati Zoo, Assam.  Now you can find various kinds of animals here.

    Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, Chhat Bir Zoo, ZirakpurSprayed over an area of 505 acres, the Chhatbir Zoo is the largest zoological garden in North India at present time. It is situated on the right bank of the famous Ghaggar river with the Shivalik hills in the background which gives this place a majestic look. This place gives you an opportunity to have naturalists take a close look at nature.  Nowadays this zoo is home to many wildlife animals. There you will see hundreds of mammals, reptiles, and birds from a close distance. 

    It has an excellent deer safari where Sambar, deer, Black Buck, and Hog Deer can be found roaming together which is sprayed over an area of 12 hectares. You can have a thrilling experience while visiting the Lion Safari. The lion safari is sprayed over an area of 8 hectares. The setting of this place is very natural and animal friendly so that they can have a normal life. You can also find an artificial lake inside the zoo which is a unique feature of this place that adds extra beauty to this place. A great number of migratory birds come here during the season of winter.

    By train: The Chandigarh Junction railway station is the closest railway station to the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park. It is also well connected with the other major cities of India. You will find taxis and cabs outside the railway station which can take you to your desired place easily.
