    History

The history of ‘Mahishadal Raj Bari’ dates back to the sixteenth Century. Almost 500 years ago, the current place ‘Geonkhali‘ was known as ‘Jibonkhali’.  It was the same time when Emperor Akbar was reigning Delhi (India). This Mahishadal Raj Bari was founded by ‘Janardhan Upadhya’, who was a high ranked personnel in the Emperor’s Army. However, this place is whispering the history of the bygone era for this place has seen the Mughal, the British and the post-Independence era.

    Inside/Outside Views

If you look at the palace, you might think that it would have looked more ‘at home’ in a European setting than in this rustic countryside in West Bengal. Here, lofty Ionic columns support the roof from all sides. Elaborate ornamentation that includes shields and floral patterns marked the white facade, giving a European vibe. In the lawn, iron benches were arranged at whose center stood a cannon mounted on a carriage. The 1926 palace (known as the ‘Phool Bagh’) was indeed designed by a French architect (said Hara Prasad Garg, a descendant of the former Mahishadal Raj family who ruled here).
