    History

    Mizoram State Museum

    The Mizoram State Museum was established in the month of April 1977 by the Tribal Research Institute under the Education Department. It came under the Art and Culture department in 1989. At first, it was housed in a rented building. But on 14 July 1990, it was moved to a new building, at Macdonald Hill, near the Chief Minister’s bungalow. Under the care of the Indian Museum, Kolkata, the museum’s galleries have undergone many renovations. It also received financial help from Victoria Memorial, Kolkata. The items stored in Mizoram State Museum vary from photographs to archaeological objects to traditional musical instruments. It also houses some specimens of natural history.

    The Mizoram State Museum in Aizawl has over  25000 items. It is an ethnographic museum with multipurpose collections on display. The museum occupies four floors and has a total of five galleries. They are-

    How to Reach

    By air: The nearest airport to the museum is the Lengpui Airport. Which is situated at a distance of 30 km from the place. After reaching the airport you can hire any local transport to reach the museum.

    By train: Situated at a distance of 120 km the Bhairabi Railway Station is the nearest railway station to the museum. It is well connected with the other major cities of the country. 

    By bus: Aizawl has a well-constructed road service. You can go there by bus also. The nearest bus stand to this place is Bhairabi Bus Station which is 121 km away from the museum. You can hire any local transport from there to reach your destination.

    Tips for Travellers

    1. Bags, Snacks, Food packets…etc are not allowed in the museum.
    2. Drinking is not allowed inside the museum.
    3. Smoking is prohibited here.
