    The Nakhoda Masjid is the largest in West Bengal. It is situated in the Chitpur area of the Burrabazar business district in Central Kolkata, at the intersection of Zakaria Street and Rabindra Sarani. The masjid is a place for prayer.     History

    This Masjid has a long history. Kutchi Memon Jamat built it as an imitation of the mosque of Mughal Emperor Akber. There were two different mosques in the present place before 1854. Haji Zakaria was a Cutchi Memon merchant and a business tycoon of his time. The Cutchi Memon is a Muslim community. They came to Kolkata around 1823. Haji Zakaria was the leader of another Sunni Muslim community. He was one of the great philanthropists and religious persons of his time. He inhabited the surrounding areas of the now Nokhada Masjid. The reconstruction work of this Masjid began in 1926 and concluded in 1935.. All the Cutchi members of Kolkata contributed to the new Masjid, but among them, Abdul Rahim Osman was the biggest donor. The total cost of the constitution was 1,500,000 Indian rupees at that time.

    The masjid is located in one of the busy places in the city. It is the largest multi-storied masjid in Kolkata. The architecture of this masjid is mind-blowing. It is reminiscent of Agra and Sikandra. It’s one of the perfect places for worship. The doorway of this masjid is magnificent. The domes of this masjid have a feel of the Taj Mahal. The vibrant color, artistic view, and peaceful atmosphere make this place unique and attractive. The prayer hall has a capacity of 10000. There are three domes and two minarets 151 feet high in this Masjid. There are also 25 smaller minarets ranging from 100 feet to 117 feet high. The gateway of this masjid is an ersatz of the Buland Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri. They brought granite stones from Tolepur to here for this reason. The outside of the masjid is chaotic, but the inside is different. The authorities have maintained the place exceptionally well. There is a market outside the temple where you can buy various things which can boggle your mind.

    By air: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is the closest airport to this Masjid. The airport has international connectivity and also connects with the major cities of India. You will find cabs, rickshaws, and taxis outside the airport to reach your destination. 

    By train: Reaching this magnificent area by train is also very easy. There is the nearest railway station to this place. One is the Kolkata railway station, and the other is the Sealdah railway station. Trains are always available here. You can take a taxi, a bus, or a cab to reach the Masjid from the station.

    By road: The Nakhoda mosque is located in the central part of Kolkata. Other cities of India are connected with it. One can hire any local transport to reach the Masjid from any part of Kolkata.
