After the ‘super cyclone’ hit Odisha in 1999, some peacocks in the wild took shelter in a small forest near the ‘Naraj Firing Range’ in Cuttack. History

This place was established by the ‘peacock man’ of Odisha, Pannu Behera, and after his death, his grandson, Kanhucharan has been carrying out this task. There are at least a hundred odd peacocks and peahens in that place. Over the years, this place has been a must-visit if anyone comes for a visit to Odisha. Located near the Naraj Dam (one may visit the dam as well) after looking at the birds, this is sure to make one’s day.

    Inside/Outside Views

If you visit the Peacock Valley, you will be able to witness a canvas of images, from a man painting to people gathered around looking into the far distance. However, the brightest color is that of the man calling the peacocks and giving them their food to eat. The place is a huge open ground with green trees on both sides of the valley. If you stand in the middle near a house, it is actually prohibited to move any further. It is not to scare the peacocks away. There is a small ‘Hillock’ right behind this field. On the other side, there seems to be a green carpet of trees. The field where the food is given is usually bare, but on both sides, there are trees standing in a line serving as the home of these beautiful slender birds.
You might have to wait for the birds to come out of their homes. This is a home of Mongoose, House Sparrow and not to mention, peacocks with a beautiful crown on their heads, walking in the slender. In the first few minutes, you can expect to see only 4 or 5 peacocks, but as the time rolls away, many more join. You can see them, in the bare fields, dancing, moving their feathers, and showing their beauty. If you are lucky enough, you might see a fight among them as well.
