Saramsa Garden is a recreational public garden situated between the slopes of Pakyong and Gangtok in the northeastern state of Sikkim, at a distance of 14 kilometers from the Gangtok SNT Bus Station. Known as Ipeca Garden, it’s one of Gangtok’s best spots for a picnic. In 1922, Bhim Bahadur Pradhan, the Forest Manager at the time, founded Saramsa Garden. This garden, which is six acres in size, is looked after by the Sikkim Forest Department and Tourism. The garden was first established to grow fruit for the colonial officers who lived nearby. Fruit plants, including banana, orange, pineapple, and guava trees, were farmed here until 1940. The garden is called Ipeca Garden because it gained notoriety for growing the medicinal plant ipecacuanha.
The plant was brought in from Malaysia and was used to make a potent alkaloid, which is very important for medicinal research. The garden was converted into an orchidarium and a picnic area for people after the cultivation of ipecacuanha was stopped in 1970. The garden features a large greenhouse that is used to conserve a variety of orchids. The majority of the plants you see here were brought in between 1975 and 1980. Picnickers and visitors alike are drawn to the area by its beautiful splendor. Over the years, the garden has undergone a number of changes. 500 people can find seating in the modern convention center that has been constructed in the garden. There are areas of the garden called blocks.
