    Shalimar Bagh is a beautifully laid out Mughal garden and it’s the largest of the three Mughal gardens in Srinagar. This pristine attraction was built in the year 1619 by the Mughal emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife Nur Jahan and lies overlooking the scintillating waters of Dal Lake It is now a public park and is known as the “crown of Srinagar“.

    Attraction

    This place was constructed on flat land along Dal Lake and has a rectangular central layout with four radiating arms. It offers splendid views of the shallow terraces and the lake. The garden houses innumerable varieties of flora that offer a marvelous play of colors when the seasons change The Shah Nahar water canal in the garden arrived by water from the Dal Lake and runs through the center of the garden.

    This place has its history going back to the second century during the period of King Pravarsena II from the Vakataka Dynasty. King Pravarsena II was the founder of Srinagar city and he built a cottage named “Shalimar” bounded by a park near Dal Lake. Although the cottage got ruined due to the lack of proper maintenance and the name Shalimar got stuck to the village which was given the same name.

    This place is Spread across a vast area of 31 acres along Dal Lake, this Bagh is a typical Mughal Garden. It has a Persian Garden layout of three terraces, 31 acres of land with dimensions 587 m in length and 251 m in depth, and each terrace is comprised of a water fountain and pool with water supply in series. There are a total of 410 fountains within the premises of this Bagh.
