    History

Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary founded in 1984 to save the variety of rhododendron species found in the area. There are over forty varieties of rhododendrons in the Yumthang Valley, which is home to a sanctuary spanning about 43 square kilometers, some of which are rare and indigenous. It has an alpine to temperate climate and is located at elevations ranging from 3,048 to 4,575 meters. The blooming season, which lasts from April to May, is especially noteworthy. The sanctuary is essential to conservation efforts since it protects a wide range of other plants and animals in addition to rhododendrons. Its founding has helped local indigenous groups like the Lepchas and promoted ecotourism by drawing in nature lovers and botanists. The sanctuary needs constant conservation and research efforts because of threats, including habitat destruction, climate change, and tourism, notwithstanding its biological significance.
