    Shitla Mata Mandir or Shitla Mata Dham in Maunath Bhanjan is an eminent temple for the goddess Shitla. This temple is located in Astupura of Mau district which falls under Uttar Pradesh of India. Shitla Mata is the goddess of pox, ghouls, pustules, sores and other diseases. She is an ancient folk deity who is worshiped in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan by many faiths. In Maunath Bhanjan, she is considered as the “Kuldevi” of the district. You should visit this temple if you are in Maunath Bhanjan.

    History

    Shitla Mata Mandir is more than 1000 years old. As the story goes, once Maa Shitla manifeste in front of the successor of the Roy dynasty and the goddesses required the land. Then they built the temple of Maa Shitla there. This temple became illustrious over a period of time.

    Inside/Outside Views

    Firstly, a big gate welcomes you inside the temple premises. After interning by the gate many shops with different products are seen from where you can buy Prasad and other things you need. This temple has a large, neat and clean area around it. In the perimeter of the temple there are some other small temples with the main temple of Mata Shitla. Inside the main temple a Shitla Mata idol predominates. A beautiful Shiva Linga with Bhingri is seen under a shade. Also a Bhoolenath Temple with an idol of Bhoolenath is placed. Besides, there are Radha Krishna temples with their idols inside and also other gods and goddesses. 

    Shitla Mata Mandir

    The premises of the Shitla Mata temple is huge. Some trees were planted and these made a garden-like view. A quite large water body is seen in the temple boundaries where different kinds of fish grow along with some turtles. Also, the ducks lingering on the pond side and the birds’ beaks on the trees make the view more beautiful.

    A big, old banyan tree provides a large shade where visitors can take a rest.

    By Air: Reach Varanasi or Gorakhpur airport by air then for reaching to the Shitla Mata temple you need to go by road. 

    By Train: Mau Railway Station is well connected with Gorakhpur, Chapra, Lucknow, New Delhi, Mumbai and other cities of India. Maunath railway station is not far from the temple. It’s only 2 kilometers. Cover the distance between railway station to the temple by any local transport. 

    By Road: Mau city is well connected with Varanasi, Gorakhpur and Azamgarh by road. Mau bus station 2 kilometers from the temple. Cover the distance by any vehicles.
