Baba Lal Das was a great saint of Saharanpur ( also known as the Bhagirath) who brought a stream of Ganga to Saharanpur through his prayers.
As the 300-year-old story says, Baba Lal Das, a saint, stayed in Saharanpur with the purpose of visiting Haridwar daily to pay his tribute to ‘Mother Ganga’ (river) before he ate anything. Ganga appeared in Saharanpur, pleased with his devotion. It started flowing near his hut, and that’s why he didn’t have to go anywhere to get his daily ritual bath. The stream was pious, and it is presently known as ‘Paondhoi Ganga’ that flows through the heart of Saharanpur city and meets the ‘Dhamola River‘ as a tributary while it leaves Saharanpur. Thus, the Paondhoi River and Baba Lal Das have become separable from each other.
Since then, the Shri Baba Lal Das has become another religious sightseeing destination in Saharanpur. The temple has been built in honor of Baba Shri Lal Das. Baba Shri Lal Das performed his ‘tapasya‘ here when he was alive. The Baba was born in Kaloor Town, and the renowned saint, ‘Shri Chetan Swami ‘, is said to have been his guru. After completing his education from his guru (teacher), Baba Lal Das came to Saharanpur to perform tapasya and stayed there for many years. The place where he meditated is 4 km north of Saharanpur, situated in the Chilkana Road bus station, and is known as ‘Lalvadi ‘.
