    History

    There is no such historical record about Shri Badrinath Temple. The Vedic scriptures (1750-500 BCE) mention the presiding deity Badrinath.
    As per Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu meditated in the area for thousands of years in the form of a berry (Badri in Hindi), and then the place became known as Badri-Vishal. People said that once the gods and the demons approached Lord Vishnu to help them churn the oceans in search of the elixir of immortality. Then Lord agreed to support, but he insisted that he would only drink the first drop that emerged from the ocean. The first drop was poison, but he (Lord Vishnu) drank it. He wanted to save the world from destruction. Then Lord Vishnu retreated to the mountains near Badrinath to keep himself from the effects of the poison.
    He returned to the mountains, where he meditated and performed severe austerities. Shree Badrinath Temple and its surrounding area hold great spiritual and cultural significance for Hindus. Thousands of pilgrims visit the temple yearly to offer their prayers and seek blessings, and that’s why it is one of the most visited temples in Chamoli.

    Shree Badrinath Temple holds immense significance both historically and spiritually. The view of this temple is mesmerizing. The temple comprises three sections: the garbha grih, the darshan mandap or puja hall, and the sabha mandap. Devotees are assembled mainly in sabha mandap. The temple’s present structure is said to have been built by the kings of Garhwal. People said that One would find the idol of Lord Badrinath. It is also called Badri Vishal, with two arms lifted, holding the shank and the chakra, and Two of his arms resting on his lap in the yoga mudra. The main idol of Lord Vishnu is seen sitting in meditation and is made of black stone. The temple also houses idols of mythical birds like Garuda, Lord Narayan’s vehicle, Adi Shankaracharya, Swami Desikan, Shri Ramanujam, etc. Visiting the temple, one can witness the beautiful architecture.
