    History

At first, Sir Syed House was a military jumble. The first Indian judge of the Allahabad High Court, Syed Mahmood, purchased it in 1876 for his father Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s home. The bungalow known as Sir Syed House remained in disrepair until the early 1970s when extensive renovations brought it back to its former splendor. It was chosen to repurpose the building as the founder’s memorial and to house the Academy bearing his name there. The Academy opened its doors on October 22, 1974. Professor Khaliq Ahmad Nizami, the Academy’s founding director, gave the entire endeavor a firm foundation with his exceptional interest in and understanding of the Aligarh Movement. The museum exhibits three galleries that are personally reminiscent of Sir Syed, a brief introduction of Sir Syed and his associates, the history of the M. A. O. College, Sir Syed’s letters and correspondence, and the list of Chancellors and Vice Chancellors of the Aligarh Muslim University are displayed.
