    Sonajhuri Forest is a stunning natural reserve forest in the ‘Bolpur-Santiniketan’ area of West Bengal, India. The forest is also known as the ‘Red Earth Forest’. It is because the forest is known for its beautiful and iconic red soil. The redness of the soil gives it a unique as well as striking appearance. The whole area is blessed with diverse flora and fauna.

    Attraction

    Sonajhuri translates to ‘droplets of gold’ in English. The forest place was named after the ‘Sonajhuri’ tree. Sonajhuri trees are available in huge numbers in this forest, and during the winter, they shed their yellow flowers (leaves). The whole forest looks as if it had been dropping off gold. The golden leaves stay on the ground in a scattered manner.
    However, the forest is also home to several important cultural as well as historic landmarks which includes the famous Khoai Mela. It is a unique cultural festival reflecting the region’s rich heritage. The festival occurs in the winter season and features traditional music, dance, articrafts, food, and handmade souvenirs. Khoai Mela is held in the region near Sonajhuri Forest attracting many tourists.

    How to Reach

    By road: It is situated in Midnapore’s ‘Kanaklata’ area. From the busy area of Midnapore, the ‘Sonajhuri Forest’ is only 80 to 100 kms away. Midnapore is well connected with other major cities like Siliguri, Delhi, Ghaziabad, Mumbai etc. of the country. And from Midnapore city, you will get local transports to reach the site.

    By air: The closest airport, ‘Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport’ (which is an international one), is almost 142 kilometres away from this area which is in Dum Dum, Kolkata. You can visit this place from outside of India. Apart from that, there are airports in Delhi, Mumbai or Lucknow with direct flights in Kolkata. From the airport, you can easily get local transports to reach the site.

    By train: The closest railway station from the ‘Sonajhuri Forest’ is only 5 km away at the ‘Bolpur Railway station’. This station is well connected with major areas of the country. From the station, you will get local transport so that you can reach the site.
