    St. Andrew’s Basilica Church Arthunkal is a famous pilgrimage site which is located in Arthunkal, Kerala. It is named after the apostle named St.Andrew. But it is basically the feast of St. Sebastian, which has earned Basilica a reputation. In the 16th century, the Portuguese missionaries built the church. Over the years, it has become an important religious site. Every year, in the month of January, they arrange an annual feast, and thousands of devotees from different countries and backgrounds come to attend it. It has spiritual significance and is a must-visit place in Arthunkal, Kerala.

    History

    St. Andrew’s Basilica Church Arthunkal has a fascinating history.  All the events occurred in the 16th century. Actually,  Portuguese Missionaries built the church first in 1584. An Italian Jesuit Priest named Fr. Jacomo Fenicio was the mastermind of the construction.  They made the church primarily using wood and coconut leaves.  But later on, it was reshaped with stone and lime. St. Andrew’s Basilica Church Arthunkal is well-known for its annual feast, which occurs every year in January.  The authority collected the statue of St. Sebastian from Milan in 1647. It adds another significance to the Basilica. In 2010, the Catholic Church Authorities gave it the status of Basilica, and the church was elevated in this way. It is considered the first Minor Basilica of Alleppey.

It has some colorful stained glass windows, which add a peaceful effect on the environment, and it also produces a wonderful light into the basilica. The visitors can also explore the newly formed sanctuary. There are some wooden pews for the worshippers. They can sit here and rest. It has a park named Rosary Park, which showcases the prominent events of Christ’s life, and it was blessed in 2019.

    By Train: Cherthala Railway Station is the nearest station to the place. It is about 7.5 km away from the place.  From here, you can take any local transport to go there.

    By Air: The closest airport to the place is Cochin International Airport. It is about 65 kilometers away from the place.  From here, you can hire a taxi or cab to get there.

    • The Winter season, from October to February,  is the best time to visit the place. 
    • Please avoid sleeveless dresses as it is a religious place.
