    History

    St. Angelo Fort was built to serve as a strategic military base to protect Portuguese interests and to monitor maritime trade in the Arabian Sea. The Fort was built in 1505 by a Portuguese Viceroy named Dem Francisco de Almeida. Later, in 1663, the Fort was captured by the Dutch, and they modified the Fort to strengthen it. After that, the Dutch sold the Fort to the Arakkal royal family, which was the only Muslim royal family in Kerala. In 1790, the British East India Company took over the Fort and made its final phase of colonial control. They used the Fort as a military base and administrative center. Now St Angelo Fort is under the Archeological Survey of India and has become one of the tourist destinations of Kerala. It provides visitors a glimpse into its colonial past and a pictorial view of the Arabian Sea.
