Tamluk is mainly a city and a municipality in West Bengal, India. It is also the headquarters of the ‘Purba Medinipur district.’ However, the historical ‘Tamluk Rajbari’ (palace) is situated in Tamluk, East Medinipur district. It has its historical and political significance. The rajbari has its history of India’s freedom movement. Even many members (associated with the freedom movement) sought shelter within its walls.
However, now Tamluk Rajbari is a museum-like palace that is whispering about the bygone era, although not in its best stage. You can visit this red brick building to pay tribute to the freedom fighters as well as to take a break from your daily life.

    Attraction

    Tamluk Rajbari

Tamluk itself is an attraction of the state as it is the site of the ancient city (variously known as ‘Tamralipta’ or ‘Tamralipti’). However, here, the Rajbari, or the King’s living place, houses many kings in West Bengal. As a result, people naturally feel attracted to the palace. Besides, the Tamluk has some other historical significance and architectural brilliance. The place is also good for photography, especially since many people visit it for pre-wedding photoshoots. The serene and calm atmosphere makes it feel more royal. History lovers find this place really interesting. If you are visiting Midnapore, we recommend you visit this place as well.

    History

History associated with the palace dates back 2,500 years. The Rajbari complex is believed to have been established in the fifth century BC by the ‘Mayuradha’ dynasty. However, it has its ties with India’s movement for freedom. In 1938, after Netaji Subhas C. B. became the president of the National Congress, he intended to hold a public meeting in Tamluk. The British government, however, conspired to disrupt the gathering at Tamluk. Despite the British government’s attempts to thwart the event, the meeting was ‘successfully’ arranged within the Rajbari premises. ‘Raja Surendra Narayan Roy,’ with hospitality and solidarity, welcomed Netaji as well. However, the Rajbari’s role in shaping the ‘Tamralipta National Government’ (in 1942) further solidifies its historical significance. Consequently, this place holds significance from various dimensions.

    Inside/Outside Views

The reddish Palace looks elegant from every angle. It is really a beautiful establishment. The left- and right-wing parts are double storied barrack like formations although the left-hand side is in ruins today. Facing the front is the giant main structure (which has wide pillared openings culminating in arches) resembling the iconic Islamic architecture. However, the entire structural complex is made of red brick. The Palace is in a totally distressed state, and it needs serious attention from the authorities.

    Tamluk Rajbari
The architecture of Tamluk Rajbari, if you take a look, reflects a blend of traditional Bengali styles with touches of ‘colonial influence.’ Well, it was common during the British era. The intricate designs, elegant facades, and expansive courtyards of Taluk Rajbari proudly showcase the grandeur of a bygone era. Despite the fact that the Palace is in some bad condition, it still retains much of its original charm. The place gracefully offers visitors a sense of the opulence that once characterized the royal residence.
