    Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, also known as Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, is situated in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. Dr. Salim Ali established the sanctuary in 1983, and it has become a popular place because of its bird diversity. It is located in the basement of the Western Ghats. The sanctuary is considered home to 270 species of birds, and it covers an area of 25.16 square kilometers.  It has both migratory and resident birds. There are various species of birds, such as Ceylon frogmouth, Indian Pitta, and Malabar grey hornbill. It also provides a plantation that includes teak, mahogany, and rosewood plants. It’s a perfect place for nature lovers.

    • Salim Ali Trail: It is a self-guided trekking trail that provides you the opportunities to explore the deep jungle and avian life at a time. The path is well-maintained. So it will be a comfortable trek. If you want to enjoy the chirping of the birds, you can visit early in the morning. This time, birds remain active.
    • Bazza Trail: It’s a guided tour that allows visitors to witness wildlife and lots of birds. The authority provides it only in the morning.
    • Frogmouth Trail: It’s a trail that is available throughout the day, and it is also a guided trail. Here, you can also explore lots of birds and wildlife at a time.
    • Butterfly Park: It’s the most attractive part of the sanctuary. Here, you can witness colorful butterflies. They are so attractive and lively.

    History

    Thattekad Bird Sanctuary has an awesome history dating back to the 1930.
    Dr. Salim Ali, the renowned ornithologist, established the sanctuary in 1983. He conducted a survey in the 1930s and discovered the area as a suitable place for rich bird habitat. So, he selected the place to build a sanctuary that would be home to various species of birds. It took 25.16 square kilometers to provide shelter to over 270 species of birds. It is located at the base of the Western Ghats.

    Inside Views: When you enter the sanctuary, you can create close contact with Nature. You can explore the lush greenery of trees like Mahogany, rosewood, and teak. Here, you can explore several self-guided and guided bird-watching trails, which will give you the opportunity to explore wildlife and lots of birds very closely.     How to Reach

    By Air: The closest airport is Cochin International Airport to the place. It is about 45 kilometers away from the place. From here, you can hire a taxi or bus to get there.

    By Train: Aluva Railway Station is the nearest station to the place.  It is only 48 kilometers away from the place. From here, you have to take an auto-rickshaw or taxi to get there.

    By Bus: The nearest town is Kothamangalam, which is about 13 kilometers away. From here you can hire a taxi or cab to get there. 

    Tips for Travellers

    • The Winter season, from October to March,  is the best time to visit the place. 
    • Carry your necessary papers, passport, water bottles & medicines,  insect repellent & energy drink.
    • Try to visit early in the morning to get the best view.
    • Respect wildlife. Don’t disturb them. Keep a safe distance.
    • Please dress according to the weather.
    • Try to wear comfortable shoes.
