    Before 1900 tea was only taken by the rich and British peoples. But after 1900 tea became a popular drink in India. The demand for tea increases rapidly. To meet up the demand of people all around the country and to increase the production, and improvement of tea a research institution was established which is the research institute back then its name was the Tocklai research station. The institution works to get better results from tea cultivation managing water, land, processing, and other factors of cultivation, and discovering new seeds. They also research the tissue culture of modern tea and its medical benefits. The tea institute is situated near the river Tocklai in Jorhat which is why it is named the Tocklai tea research institute. Tea production in the institution is increasing rapidly. The bushes of tea are more than a hundred years old. There are ten branches of the research institute with an area of 349,041 hectares (1317 square mi). The tea institute is providing its services to 1076 states. In the tea industry, the Tocklai tea research institute is playing a vital role.

    Inside the  tea institute, there is an analytical laboratory with much contemporary equipment. The researchers of the institute do chemical tests on soil, organic manures, fertilizers, and stuff related to tea plants. There are tea bushes that are more than a hundred years old. Outside the tea institute, there is a river Tocklai.
