Ladakh

Ladakh is a region administered by India as a union territory, which constitutes a part of the larger Kashmir region and has been the subject of dispute between India, Pakistan, and China since 1947. Ladakh is bordered by the Tibet Autonomous Region to the east, the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh to the south, and both the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Location

It is bounded by Jammu and Kashmir union territory to the west and by Himachal Pradesh to the south and its northern and eastern borders are disputed with Pakistan and China, respectively. This state was administered as part of Jammu and Kashmir state from 1947 until 2019 when it became a separate administrative unit.

Language

The Ladakhi language is a Tabetic language spoken in Ladakh, a region administered by India as a union territory, and it is the predominant language in the Buddhist-dominated district of Leh. Though a member of the Tibetan family, this state is not mutually intelligible with Standard Tibetan

The land of Ladakh, apart from being one of the remotest corners of India, is also quite different from the other regions of India Just like the geographical features of the area, the people of this state are also quite dissimilar from the rest of the country.

History of Ladakh

The present Ladakh was divided into two provinces while the third comprised western Tibet The area of western Tibet slipped away from the kingdom but was reunited in 16th Century A.D. by the famous Ladakhi ruler Sengge Namgyal. This state was an independent country since the middle of the 10th century.

Weaving is considered an essential part of traditional life in eastern Ladakh Some festivals of Ladakh are: Hemmis Festival – Hemmis Monastery has an annual festival named after it. Losar – Losar, also known as Tibetan New Year and is a festival in Tibetan Buddhism.

Cultural Foods of Ladakh

Thukpa is the staple food of the people of Ladakh, and It is a soupy noodle dish with assorted vegetables and minced meat

How to reach Ladakh

By air: By air with a flight to Kishok Bakula Rinpoche airport Aiuchis located just 4 km from Leh city center.

By rail: You cannot reach Ladakh directly by train as there is no train station in this state. The nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi. 

By road: There are two ways to reach Ladakh and its capital city Leh: by road via Manali or Srinagar and by air with a flight to Kishok Bakula Rinpoche airport which is located just 4 km from Leh city center.
