Uttarakhand, formerly Uttaranchal, state of India, situated in the northwestern part of the country. It has a highly varied landscape, with snow-covered peaks, glaciers, deep canyons, roaring streams, beautiful lakes, and a few patches of dusty plains in the south. Area 19,739 square miles (51,125 square km).

Location

It is surrounded to the northwest by the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, to the northeast by the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, to the southeast by Nepal, and to the south and southwest by the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Its capital is the northwestern city of Dehra Dun.

Language

The central languages of Uttarakhand are the following: Kumaoni – The Kumaoni language forms the main subcategory of the Pahari language. It is one of the 325 accepted Indian languages and is articulated by a majority of people in Uttarakhand. It has numerous dialects. Hindi is the official language of the state of Uttarakhand.

Peoples

Uttarakhand has a mixed population banquet across two recognized geocultural regions: the Garhwal, which resembles roughly to the northwestern half of the state, and the Kumaun, which extents the southeast. According to the 2011 Census of India, Uttarakhand has a population of 10,086,292 comprising 5,137,773 males and 4,948,519 females, with 69.77% of the population living in rural areas.

History of Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand was the antique Puranic term for the central stretch of the Indian Himalayas. A population speaking a language that belongs to the Munda language family. The Kol peoples were later joined by Indo Ayran tribes that arrived from the north by the Vedic Period.
Jaunsar- Bawar was Part of Garhwal Kingdom. It is the boundary area of Garhwal so it was bagged sometimes by Sirmaur rules. But Garhwal Kings defeated Sirmaur and again Jaunsar-Bawar became part of Garhwal. We can still experience Sirmaur language words in Jaunsari. And Garhwali surname in Jaunsar. In 1829, Jaunsar-Bawar was combined in Chakrata tehsil, prior to which it had been a part of Punjab state of Srmur, till the British conquered it along with Dehradun after the 1814 war with the Ghurkas. In 1791, the growing Ghurka empire of Nepal overran Almora the seat of the Kumaon Kingdom. In 1803, the Garhwal Kingdom also fell to the Gurkhas. With the conclusion of the Nepalese war in 1816, a rump portion of the Garhwal Kingdom was re-established from Tehri and eastern British Garhwal and Kumaon ceded to the British as part of the treaty of suguali
Uttarakhand was the name most usually used to refer to the region, as various political groups counting most significantly the Uttarakhand Kranti dal(Uttarakhand Revolutionary Party est. 1979), began stirring for separate statehood under its banner, Until 1998. In August 2006, India’s Union Cabinet agreed to the four-year-old demand of the Uttaranchal state assembly and leading members of the Uttarakhand movement to rename Uttaranchal state as Uttarakhand. Lawmaking to that effect was passed by the State Legislative Assembly in October 2006, and the Union Cabinet brought in the bill in the winter session of Parliament. The bill was passed by Parliament and hired into law by the President in December 2006. Since then, Uttarakhand signifies a state in India.

The culture recognizes its people uniquely and gives them a meaning. The various traditions, religions, fairs, festivals, folk dances, music are what distinctly separate them from the rest of the crowd Their simple lifestyle, honesty, and modesty, the people of Uttarakhand mirror a sincere bond with nature and gods. Uttarakhand still revolves around its traditional ethics, moral values, the simplicity of nature and a rich mythology.
It is also home to ethnic groups like Bhotias, Jaunsaries, Tharus, Bokshas, and Rajis. Although the main part of the region is seen speaking native languages like Kumaoni and Garhwali, Hindi, Urdu, and Punjabi are also widely spoken. Various tribal communities are both nomadic and those hailing from the Indo-Aryan descent are part of the ethnicity of Uttarakhand.

The Kumbh Mela is held every twelve years where you can witness one of the largest gatherings of devotees in the whole world. Females dress are Ghagara, Aagari, Dhoti Kurta, Bhotu. While for males churidar pajama, Kurta, gol topi or Jawahar topi, Bhotu, Dhoti, Mirje are worn.
Popular dance is Chanchari, it is the Folk-Dance of Uttrakhand state. Major Festivals is Holi, Dipawali, Eid, Bakra Id, Lohri, Makar Shakranti, Raksha Bandhan, Maha Shivratri, Durga Puja, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Christmas. Kumauni Holi, Ganga Dashahara are other major festivals.

By Air: The airports, where the flights from altered states fly in, go by the name of Pantnagar Airport which is located in the Pantnagar in Kumaon Region, Jolly Grant airport situated in Dehradun and Naini Saini Airport in the Pithoragarh. Jolly Grant is the most well-connected of the three airports in Uttarakhand.
