    In the Dimapur district of Nagaland, Zoological Park or Nagaland Zoological Park is located and is at a distance of 6 km from the township. With a rolling plateau and low-lying areas suitable for aquatic birds, the park is located in an area of 176 ha. In the year of 2008, the park commenced and the mission of the park is to amplify and ingraft a sense of caring towards the flora and fauna of the region.  For the fauna of the North East in general and Nagaland in particular, it also wants to serve as a conservation center. Awareness, as well as education, are promoted and recreation is also provided for the people of the state by the park’s authorities. It also wants the people of Nagaland to be promoted with awareness and education.

    The major tourist attraction of the place is the varied species of flora and fauna and this place can be the best part of your trip if you are traveling with family and kids.     History

    The Great Indian Hornbill is one of the larger members of the hornbill family and it is found largely in Southeast Asia.

    In India, Nagaland Zoological Park, Rangapahar is one of the Model Zoological Parks.  By Central Zoo Authority (CZA), it was initially granted acceptance as a “mini” Zoo which is now recognized as a Medium Zoo by the Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi. Every year after it was opened to the public, This Zoological Park has been attracting more and more visitors.  As part of the curriculum, Students both from schools and colleges comes to visit the park. Many efforts by the authority are taken to encourage travelers in the field of nature education and the protection of biodiversity. The number of visitors increasing day by day, annually  67367 visitors come to visit the park.

    The park has been making attempts to increase the number of captive wildlife species since its inauguration. Recently, more than 100 different species of captive wildlife comprising mammals, birds, reptiles, and those belonging to the cat family have been boosted by the park. The seamless mixture of a lush green landscape filled with copious botanical species and the representative presence of wildlife including indigenous species is one special characteristic of this park. This park has the potential to develop spots like deer safari and free animal ranch where the species would get natural feeds, fodder, forage, and water, all provided by nature, keeping in view the natural landscape. This parks mission, as of now, includes inculcating a deep sense of not only appreciating the flora and fauna but also promoting awareness of wildlife besides providing the much-needed recreational facilities to the people of the state and biodiversity enthusiasts, with the primary objective of preservation and protection of biodiversity – both flora and fauna.

    Entry & Others Fees

    To get access to the park, a minor entry fee is required which is different for adults and children.

    All weekdays except Monday, the zoo remains open from 8 am to 4 pm. For adults the entrance fee is Rs 10/- and is Rs 5/-for children. You will be charged Rs 25/-for Carrying a still camera and for carrying a video camera you would be charged Rs. 100/-.

    How to Reach

    By Air: Well connected to Guwahati and Kolkata, the only airport in Nagaland is in Dimapur.  The nearest airport will be in Guwahati or Kolkata when you are in need of an international flight. From you will get transport easily by which you can reach the park.

    By Rail: In Nagaland, Dimapur is the only railway station as well which is only connected to Kolkata and Guwahati. To kick start the holiday in the Northeast, visitors will have to first get down at Guwahati, and then take another train to reach Dimapur. After reaching the station the way to reach the park is quite easy as there are almost all kinds of transport available outside the station.

    By Road: Dimapur is well linked to some other parts of the state. Connecting  Dimapur to Kohima, Imphal, and the Myanmar border at Moreh, National Highway 39 is there. NH 36 connects Dimapur with Doboka and later Guwahati via NH 37.  One can easily find Auto Rickshaws or rickshaws here to reach from one sightseeing place to another.

    1. Though the park is safe to visit but as it is a public place you must be on the safe side.

    2. You can get food here but it would be good to carry your own snacks or at least a water bottle.
