An alternative form of shrine honoring valor and selflessness rather than a specific faith is the Baba Harbhajan Singh shrine. One Indian Army soldier who is frequently referred to as the “Hero of Nathula” is Baba Harbhajan Singh. This is because, at the tender age of 26, he gave his life as a sacrifice. He received the Maha Vir Chakra in September 1967 as a reward for his valor and martyrdom. The Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple is situated 13,123 feet above sea level, halfway between Jelep La Pass and Nathula Pass. It is easily accessible by public transportation and is roughly 60 km from Gangtok. A must-see on any Sikkim tour, this is one of the main attractions in East Sikkim.

    Attraction

It is devoted to Baba Harbhajan Singh, an Indian Army soldier who is thought to have guarded the border after passing away in 1968. Baba is believed to guard the area and his fellow troops in this mythology, which attracts a lot of people looking to get his blessings. The temple is renowned for its magnificent position, which boasts beautiful views of the mountains at a height of 13,123 feet. Many devotees gather for an annual fair on September 11, which marks the anniversary of Baba Harbhajan Singh’s death. Many times, guests leave personal belongings at the temple in the hopes of obtaining Baba’s blessings. It is a singular and captivating attraction because of its historical significance, mysterious legend, and beautiful surroundings.

    History

Born in Kapurthala, Punjab, on August 30, 1946, Harbhajan Singh enlisted in the Indian Army in 1966 and was assigned to the Punjab Regiment. He drowned in a brook in October 1968 while escorting a mule column.

The fact that his body was located using instructions from a dream shared by a coworker gave rise to the notion that he was still alive. His regiment built the temple close to the location of his body’s discovery, and it has since grown to be a popular destination for pilgrims. As a venerated guardian spirit, Baba Harbhajan Singh is thought to keep soldiers safe in the dangerous Eastern Himalayan environment. Many troops attribute their experiences of receiving direction and warnings through dreams to his alert nature.

    Inside/Outside Views

With breathtaking views of the neighboring mountains and valleys, the temple is perched high above the breathtaking Himalayan environment.

The building is a modest structure that resembles a regular military post, but it has been significantly enhanced and decorated to give it a religious aspect. The Indian Army has done a good job of maintaining the environment surrounding the temple, which includes a statue of Lord Shiva next to a little waterfall that draws more attention from tourists. There are three rooms in the temple’s interior. big portrait of Baba Harbhajan Singh and pictures of Hindu and Sikh deities may be found in the middle room. Baba’s own chamber, with his bed, uniform, and immaculate boots, is located on one side. It’s thought that his boots get filthy in the nighttime and that the crumpled bed linens in the morning represent his ghostly presence. The third room is used as a storeroom and office, and it is stocked with items donated by followers, such as slippers and water bottles. It is believed that the water housed in the temple has therapeutic qualities.4-
