    History

    The waterfall gets its name from the Malayalam word “Charpa” which means rocky terrain. The source of this waterfall is from River Chalakudy which flows with great speed along the roadside. The waterfall is around 30 metres high formed by the Charpa River. This waterfall plays an important ecological role by supporting diverse ecosystems and habitats.
    Chapra waterfall is a part of the Sholayar ranges in the Western Ghats, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the eight hottest hotspots of biological diversity in the world.
    During monsoon season, Chapra waterfall looks terrific. In Kerala monsoon comes twice, the first period starts from June to August and the second period starts from October to December. During the arid season, the waterfall dries up which underscored the importance of timing.

    How to Reach

    By Air: Cochin International Airport is the closest airport which is approximately 65 km away from the waterfall. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or other ride-sharing service to  Athirappilly. Athiappilly is about 5-7 km from the Thrissur town. The journey usually takes about 1.5 or 2 hours.  From Athirappilly you will take a taxi or an auto rickshaw to reach Chapra waterfall. 

    By Train: The nearest Station to Chapra waterfall is Chalakudy Railway Station. It is about 10 km away from the waterfall.  From the station, you can hire a taxi to Athirappilly, which is about 5-7 km from Thrissur town. From Athirappilly you can take an auto rickshaw taxi or other transport to reach Chapra waterfall. 

    By Road: Bus services are available from Athirappilly to Thrissur. From Athirappilly you can easily access by bus to reach the Charpa Waterfall.
