Mayiladumpara, literally, means ‘the rock where peacocks dance.’ As per a 2022 report, it is the only peafowl sanctuary in Kerala.

    Attraction

Chulanur Peafowl SanctuaryThe reason that made this sanctuary famous is pretty funny. That Rajasthan High Court Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma made the highly controversial remark that ‘peacocks do not mate and that female peacocks conceive from the tears of male peacocks,’ is why the number of visitors to the peacock sanctuary increased afterward.

However, the concept of ecotourism has started, and we can go inside the sanctuary free of cost. The level of greenery and the calmness of this place make it a heaven for nature lovers. Many reviewers describe the atmosphere surrounding the sanctuary as awesome and peaceful. Some visitors also mentioned seeing peacocks inside the sanctuary with great enthusiasm.

The whole area is blessed by natural beauty as well as flora and fauna. The sanctuary also is praised for being well-managed and informative. Visitors can learn a lot about birds, animals, and plants available in the sanctuary.

    History

This is a natural resource, and not much historical information has been found. As per government order numbered G.O.(P) 24/2007/F&WLD, Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary was established on 15 May 2007. In 2008, it was renamed ‘Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary’ and dedicated to the memory of Sri. K. K. Neelakantan’. For a long time, this park has been a place where people can enjoy some time amidst nature.
