The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Museum, first opened in 1959, is a Mahatma Gandhi memorial museum in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is currently known as Gandhi Museum and is one of the country’s five Gandhi Sangrahalaya (Gandhi Museums). It features a piece of Gandhi’s blood-stained clothing from his assassination by Nathuram Godse.

Gandhi Memorial Museum not only gives visitors an insight into Mahatma Gandhi’s life, but it also has historical importance. This edifice, which was once a palace for Rani Mangammal of the Naick dynasty, has seen several monarchs throughout the years. In some ways, it also depicts the passage of history from one epoch to the next. It is certainly one of the locations on a Madurai tour that should not be missed. The museum hosts a variety of events for the benefit of tourists and inhabitants. Self-employment classes, Hindi and Sanskrit courses, yoga classes, pranayama and meditation sessions, and many other types of programs are held on a daily basis. Festivals are also celebrated with zeal at this museum. Every year, for example, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2nd, a 5-day program is held. The event will feature a number of well-known lecturers and performers from throughout the country.

Madurai’s existing Gandhi Memorial Museum is a historically significant structure. It used to be Rani Mangammal’s palace from the Naick dynasty. It was erected in 1670 A.D. and is known as Tamukkam Palace. This palace, which is spread out over 13 acres, is a work of architectural art that entices every visitor. During the colonial era, however, this palace was ruled by various dynasties as well as the East India Company. It was once the official house of Madurai’s British District Collector. The Tamil Nadu State Government presented this palace to the All India Gandhi Smarak Nidhi in 1955. It was carried out in order to establish a Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai. Gandhi Smarak Nidhi established and continues to maintain this museum. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first to launch it in 1959.

The Gandhi Memorial Museum not only has a large collection, but it also has a beautiful building. This edifice, which was once known as Tamukkam and belonged to Rani Mangammal during Nick’s reign, is a lovely construction worth appreciating. A hut known as Gandhi Kuti may be found in front of the Gandhi Memorial Museum’s main structure. It is situated somewhat to the south of the main structure. It was built as a duplicate of Mahatma Gandhi’s original hut in Sevagram. A part of Khadi and Village Industries is located on the bottom level of the building. A library with around 20,000 volumes may be found on the building’s northern side. There is also an open-air theatre. It is located to the south of the museum’s main structure. Approximately 8000 people can be accommodated in this large open-air theatre. A freshly constructed wing on the northern side of the building holds a library as well.
