    Situated on an island in Chilika Lake. Kalijai temple is considered to be the abode of the Goddess Kalijai. In reality, Goddess Kalijai is Kali, the source and the first ‘Mahavidya’ of ‘Dasmahavidyas’ which is highly worshiped by the local populace. For pilgrims as well as tourists, an excellent destination is provided by the island. A huge gala fair is held every year in January, during the festival of Makar Sankranti. You can make a good memory by getting a picture clicked by the local and besides you can print it in 5 minutes. Like any other small temple, the temple of Kali is much worshiped by locals. In Odisha, this is supposed to be a very famous temple but it is not at all maintained and very dirty. Besides a wrong picture of swatch Bharat is given by it. From the Balugoan jetty, the Kalijai Island is about a 30 Min boat ride. Dedicated to the Goddess Kali, there is a single temple provided on the island.

One had to hire boats, to go to the Maa Kalijai temple as it is only reachable by water. For picnics, get-togethers,s and also for family enjoyment, it’s a perfect island. Here one can enjoy the sea view as well as enjoy the boat ride. Only for its picturesqueness Budget half an hour for it, and a good photo opportunity, the place is very much worth visiting

    One can also enjoy heart-throbbing things by traveling to this temple by boat. The middle part of Chilika lake which is the coastal area of Odisha is the base of this temple. As per folklore, goes, the temple is dedicated to a young newlywed who sunken, while on her way to meet her husband. As there are many shops selling eatables and items for Pooja, the approach is crowded however, the temple is quaint. The temple attracts many visitors and devotees year round although it is not very big. Visitors are unable to disembark from the boat by a floating jetty and after visiting the temple one can take a walk along the island. A viewing platform is present there, from where the path starts and a tiny way down the way leads to a decent picnic spot. The only issue with this island is that it is dirty and strewn with the discarded wrapper.

    How to Reach

    By Air: Situated at Bhubaneswar, the nearest airport to Chilka is Bhubaneshwar airport, which is 105 km from Barkul, 110 km from Satapada, and from Rambha, 130 km. From the Airport, you can take any public or private transport to reach your destination.

    By rail: Chilka Lake is touched at Balugaon, Chilika, Khallikote, and Rambha by the Calcutta-Chennai railway route of South Eastern Railways touch.  For Barkul, the nearest railway station is located at Balugaon at a distance of 5 km from Chilka. There are various kinds of transport available in the station through which you can reach your desired place.

    By Road: Chennai National Highway No. 5 linking Calcutta at about a distance of 689 km, Cuttack at a distance of 132 km, and Visakhapatnam at about a distance of  348 km, to reach the lake. From Puri and Bhubaneswar, OTDC and other private tour operators provide luxury coaches and cars.
