    Kamaka is known as an important Hindu Tantric goddess who emerged in the mountain Himalayan. The meaning of her name is ‘is the renowned goddess of desire’. She is worshiped in the Kamakhya temple situated in Guwahati Assam of India. This ancient temple is one of the oldest 51 Shakti Peethas. The temple sits on Nilachal Hill adjoining the bank of the Brahmaputra river in the western part of Guwahati city in Assam of India. The place is very significant to the Hindu religious people and especially for the Tantric.

    History

    This temple is one of the ancient temples in India. It is devoted and resident of the goddess Kamakhya. There is a saying that it was built between the eighth and the ninth century during the reign of the Mleccha Dynasty. The temple was destroyed when Hussain Shah occupied the Kamata Kingdom. The temple was rediscovered in the 1500s by the founder of the Koch Dynasty Viswa Singha as a holy place of worship. This temple was reconstructed in 1565.  There are many mysterious and unknown histories of the Kamakhya temple. It is said that it is a place of black magic where Tantric practices their worship and rituals.

    Around this temple, several temples are situated. There are ten Mahavidyas temples which include Bhuvaneshvari, Bagalamukhi, Chinnamasta, Tripura Sundari, Tara, Kali, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, Matangi, and Kamala. All of those temples are situated in the neighboring area of Kamakhya temple and among them. Tripurasundari, Matangi, and Kamala are located inside the main temple and the other seven temples are located very near to the Kamakhya temple on Nilachalmaterials. the walls of the temple there are stone curved designs and also there are ancient sculptures which are so amazing. There are many shops on both sides of the entrance road of the temple. In the shops, visitors will get puja or worship materials. The temple has a large area with many buildings and temples adjoining it. Inside the territory of Kamakhya temple, there is a museum and park. There are no statues inside the temple to worship rather people worship the reproductive organ of the goddess shaped in a stone. During June, the main gate of the temple remains closed. It is believed that during that time the goddess is in the menstruation period and due to this reason the blood flows into the reproductive organ, also the blood-filled in the ponds of the temple and the river Brahmaputra. There is a sacrifice house of animals in the temple. Visitors and devotees slaughter animals in the name of goddess Kamakhya. The outside view from this temple is so mesmerizing it can’t be expressed in words. As it is situated on a hill the view of surrounding hills, villages, and rivers is truly amazing to its nature-loving visitors and devotees.

    By Railway: The nearest railway station of the Kamakhya temple is Kamakhya station which is 5.6 km away. It will take approximately 16 minutes from the station to reach the destination. The Guwahati railway station is 8 km away from the temple and it will take around 23 minutes to reach the destination.

    By Airport: The nearest airport to the Kamakhya temple is Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi airport which is 20.2 km away. It will take approximately 34 minutes from the airport to reach the destination by bus or cab.
