    Kangal fort is the ancient fort at Imphal in Manipur, India. The word ‘Kangal’ means “dry land” in old Meetei It was situated on both sides (eastern and Western) of the bank of the Imphal river and now it only remains on the Western side of the bank It is also called Kangal place and it is also called Manipur’s glory. The fort itself was a beautiful structure and it looks marvelous.

    Kangal is the most historical place in Manipur There is a story behind this fort. A number of Meetei people have ruled this fort. When the mythical God-king of Manipur Nongda Lauren Panghaba first ascended the throne in 34 AD. King Khagembad ordered the construction of a brick wall on the western part of the throne and it was gradually renovated and developed by successive kings who rule the place. Afterward, Khunjaoba his son put immense effort into beautifying the fort and excavated a moat on the western part of the fort. In 1891 after the Anglo-Manipur war it was taken over by the British Army. After 2004, the Assam Rifle took control of it. The Kangal fort was handed over by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the state government of Manipur on 20 November 2004. Now, the fort is open to many visitors.
