The Kuteti Devi Temple is Situated on the bank, far from the chaos of the town. It was constructed on an ancient site, but the majestic temple appears new here. Uttarkashi is the headquarters of the district. Kedeti Devi Temple is located at a distance of 199 KM from Dehradun on the route to Gangotri. Travelers prefer to come in October to May as it is considered the best time to visit. It should also be noted that during winter, people witness snowfall, especially on the surrounding hills. Traveling becomes challenging as the landslides may also happen due to heavy rain.

    History

The Maharaja of Kota (Rajasthan) lost a bag of money while he was on a pilgrimage to Gangotri. Consequently, he could not meet the required expenses, so he returned to Uttarkashi, where he prayed for deliverance from his problems at the Vishwanath temple, promising to get married to his only daughter to any suitable person from the village, should his bag be found. The bag was finally found by the priest (inside the temple) and with all the money intact. The delighted ‘Maharaja’ then requested the priest to arrange a suitable match for his daughter. Then, Rajkumari was married to a boy chosen by the priest of the Vishwanath Temple. But the princess was very disappointed because marriage would take her away from her family deity, Kuteti Devi (whom she had always worshipped). So, the husband and wife prayed to the goddess to help them. Kuteti Devi appeared suddenly in their dreams and informed them that she would be present in their fields but in the shape of a stone. The Rajkumari and her husband then discovered three stones with a heavenly aroma. The Kuteti Devi Temple was erected on the exact spot where these stones were found.

    Inside/Outside Views

This temple is dedicated to Hindu deity – Kuteti Devi and it is located on top of ‘Hari parvat’ which is at a distance of only two kilometres from Uttarkashi. Apart from ‘darshan’, ‘puja’ and blessings of the deity, the place is very beautiful and people also come here to enjoy the nature with spectacular views.
Away from the dirt of Uttarkashi, the walk to Kutati Devi temple allows you to appreciate the true beauty of the city in its God-given setting. There are mountains all around and meandering its way through them the gushing Bhagirathi river with Uttarkashi spread on both banks and rising into the mountains.
The temple is situated across the river from the town and surrounded by mountains. It is a short walk uphill across the walking bridge.
From inside the Kudeti Devi Temple, like many other ancient temples, gives an exquisite view. It is interesting and peaceful. As often happens that many people claim a place and it gets divided with ‘the old being neglected’ and ‘new being center of attraction’. Kuteti too has suffered the divisiveness of the society and thus a new garish marble edifice has come up behind the real temple. You might pick which one you wish to visit too.
