    History

Legend says that, during the Kanchi War, Sri Gobinda Bhanjadeo, the monarch of Keonjhar State at the time, placed Maa Tarini in the year 1480. Tarini Maa was being brought by the King of Keonjhar from Puri to Keonjhar with the proviso that she would not proceed further if he turned around. To go to Kendujhar, the Goddess rode behind the horse-riding King. The sound of Maa Tarini’s ornaments gave the King the impression that she was approaching from behind, but when the ornaments stopped near the Ghatagaon in the deep forest, the monarch turned around and assumed she had not. However, Maa Tarini was approaching, and her ornamental noises were not coming because of the dirt in the jungle. Because of the state, Maa Tarini stayed there and worshipped as the queen of the forest.
