It is surrounded by the beautiful Western Ghats on all sides. Malampuzha Dam is actually a combination of a masonry dam (which has a length of 1,849 meters) and an Earthen dam (which has a height of 220 meters). The dam is 355 feet high. It also crosses the Malampuzha River, which is a tributary of Bharathapuzha. The river is Kerala’s second-largest river. However, the dam has many attractions nearby, like the rock garden, amusement park, and ropeway,  and visitors often enjoy boating here as well. This place is ideal to visit with family and friends.

    History

Malampuzha Dam is considered the largest reservoir in Kerala. It is served by a network of 2 canal systems. In 1949, its construction was initiated, and it took nearly 6 years to complete the project. The foundation stone (of the project) was laid on 27 March 1949 by Sri. M. Bhaktavatsalam (who was the then Public Works Minister). However, during the time of its initiation, Palakkad used to be a part of Madras presidency. Consequently, the dam was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Madras, ‘Sri. K. Kamaraj’ on 9 October 1955.

    Inside/Outside Views

A drive along the edge of the reservoir of ‘Malampuzha Dam’ is quite exciting. Upon your visit,  you can see that the level of the reservoir remains quite high, with water just three to four feet below the road level in some places. During the rainy season, when it rains very heavily, the water cascades down the spillways beautifully. Besides, while driving along the road of Grand Hills, you can encounter seasonal mini waterfalls as well.
Some of the visitors mentioned that there is a scenic spot called ‘Kava Island’ inside the reservoir, which is visible in dry seasons. But in the rainy season, the islands might be submerged. However, you can find some basic food as well as ordinary restaurants along the road.Malampuzha Dam view pointThe best view of this place can be enjoyed when you explore nature on your own.
