Now where Mysore Palace is, there used to be a village called Puragiri. In 1524, Chamaraja Wadeyar-3 built the fort of Mysore here. Later this fort-palace has been rebuilt many times. When the previous palace was destroyed by fire, then King Rajarshi Sri Krishnaraja Wadeyar-4 appointed the English architect Henry Irwin in 1896 to build the new palace. But that’s not the end of the story, says B. Lewis Rice, author of The Gazetteer, when the British and Wadeyar-3 returned victoriously, there was no home in Mysore to live in. There was an incomplete fort built in a short time. Then King Krishnaraja Wadeyar-3 was crowned. Then the newly elected rebuilt the palace.
