    History

    Our Lady of Dolours Basilica was established in 1814. It was built by the Syro Malabar Catholic Church, reflecting its rich heritage.  The church, popularly known as “Puthenpally, was blessed on 10th October 1925 by Bishop Mar Francis Vazhappilly.  It was a center for St. Thomas Christian in the area for decades. It has an area of 25,000 sq ft and is 261 ft. tall. It is adjacent to the Martha Marian Church. Almost 30,000 people can be accommodated in the church at a time. The grand basilica is renowned for its Indo-Gothic architecture and cultural significance. It is one of the tallest churches in India. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Dolours as a sorrowful mother,  a title for the Virgin Mary.
    This is the most famous Marian Pilgrim central in Thrissur. The church’s historical importance and its role as a pilgrimage site make it a must-visit for those seeking a deeply spiritual experience in a visually stunning setting.

The church is famous for its Christian art gallery. There is an adoration Chapel inside the church. There is also a museum inside the church in the tower. At the top of the tower, you can feel relaxed and feel a cool breeze.
    There is a shop nearby where you can get all religious things and books. The Bible Tower is just beside the park. The serene atmosphere and stunning architecture make it heaven for spiritual reflection and architecture appreciation. It is not only a place of worship but also a pilgrimage site.

    By Air: Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport to Basilica. It is about 55 km away from the place. From here you can take a taxi, train or other transport to reach the church. 

    By Train: Thrissur Junction is the nearest station to the church. It is approximately 2 km away from the place. From here, you can hire a taxi or auto rickshaw to reach the Basilica. 

    By Bus: Thrissur Bus Station is well connected to the city center. From the bus station, you can take an auto-rickshaw or other transport to reach the Basilica.
