Our Lady of Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the largest and most prominent churches in Kerala. It is situated at the heart of Thrissur City in the state of Kerala. This Church is dedicated to Our Lady Lourdes, a title given to the Virgin Mary. It is famous for its architecture and underground prayer room. This Church is called “Adapalli,” which means it has an underground church. The Church is perfect for prayer. The Church’s prayers are in Malayalam language. Every month, The Cathedral Church attracts thousands of pilgrims. It is the major landmark in the city.

Attraction

The well-decorated underground Chapel of the Cathedral is the major attraction. The underground prayer room is air conditioned, well maintained and wonderfully decorated. There is a permanent exhibition of artwork depicting the life of Jesus Christ. The Cathedral features impressive Gothic-style architecture, with towering spires and ornate facades. The church is decorated with beautiful paintings and glass paintings. In the evening, the church looks very nice because of the colourful lighting.
The exterior of the Church feature is Indo-European and faced with pink spires. There is one altar under the main altar.

History

Our Lady Of Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral constructed by Ft. John Maliekal at East Fort, in the Indo- European style in 1885. This is the first church in India which has a cellar church. Firstly, this was under the headquarters at Verapoly but later went to the Syrians. In 1958, the church was built in a Gothic style. In 1995, Thrissur was given Metropolitan status, and the church was named the Metropolitan Cathedral.
The centenary of this church was celebrated during the historic visit of Pope II to Thrissur in 1986.

Inside/Outside Views

The church has beautiful architecture, which creates a divine atmosphere both inside and outside. There is an underground chapel, a grotto, and another chapel at the main entrance of the cathedral church. The special underground prayer room is amazing. Inside the church, you feel the silence, which makes you peaceful in prayer. There are benches inside the church where you can sit for prayer.The church has a large auditorium, which is used for marriage functions, and a small hall used for funeral functions. There is also a large graveyard. In front of the church, there is enough parking space. The outside of the church colour is light pink. The Medical College and hospital is situated near the Cathedral Church, whose name is Jubilee Mission. The entire surrounding church is covered with CCTV cameras.

By Bus: Bus Services are available from Thrissur to other cities. Thrissur KSRTC Bus Station is near the Cathedral. From here, you can easily take an auto-rickshaw or taxi to the Cathedral.
