    A sanctuary is a protected area where animals can live freely without the threat of hunting. Punnathur Kotta is one of the famous sanctuaries in Kerala. Punnathur Kotta is known as Elephant Palace and is located in Kottapadi in the Thrissur district of Kerala. Around 3 km from this area is a famous Krishna Guruvayoor Temple. It is the place where people worship the elephant face as the god Lord Ganapathy.  It is a costly sanctuary with around 60 elephant houses here, which are used for Temple rituals and festivals. The elephants are well-kept, and the sanctuary has veterinary facilities. It’s wonderful to see the dedication and care to serve Lord Krishna. Here, the elephants participate in various temple festivals, which reflect the importance of these animals in the local culture. It is one of the special places to visit in Kerala.

    History

    Punnathur Kotta name comes from the palace of local rulers. Primarily, Punnathur Kotta was a palace that belonged to local rulers. It was later transformed into an elephant sanctuary and became known as “Anna Kotta,” which means” elephant fort.” Around 1985, the temple authorities set up a camp for the service of the elephants. This sanctuary has the oldest elephant, who is around 82 years of age; its name is “Ramachandran.”

    Punnathur Kotta serves as a popular tourist attraction, allowing visitors to learn about elephant care and the significance of these animals in Kerala’s culture.

    The surrounding area is spacious and well-maintained, providing a natural and comfortable environment for the elephants. The serene atmosphere and lush greenery make it a peaceful retreat.
    The elephants are trained and friendly. They don’t harm anyone. There are many staff members who look after elephants. The staff takes care of every animal. They are appointed in different sessions.  A staff member ensured that the interaction was safe for both visitors and elephants.     By Air: Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport, approximately 55 km from Punnathur Kotta. From the Airport, you can hire a taxi or an auto to reach Punnathur Kotta.

    By Train: The closest railway station is Thrissur Railway Station, which is approximately 25 km from Punnathur Kotta.  From here, you can take a taxi to reach Punnathur Kotta. 

    By Road: Bus services are available from Thrissur to Punnathur.
