    St. Philomena’s Cathedral is considered not only one of the oldest but also one of the largest churches in India which were built in 1936. The full name of this outstanding church is the Cathedral of St. Joseph and St. Philomena. The church was built using a Neo-Gothic style. The place carries a significant role to the Christian people and especially for the Catholics.

    From an inscription, Maharaja Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar built a church in 1843 where St. Philomena is now. Maharaja came by a relic of a saint of the East Indies. On 28 October 1933, the Maharaja stepped forward to work out the foundation of the church St. Philomena. The church carries a good impression of local culture. Moreover, a famous Bollywood Film Amar Akbar Anthony was captured inside St. Philomena.

    St. Philomena church is so fairy and angelic from both inside and outside. It was built in Neo-Gothic style. The church is modeled after Cologne Cathedral in Germany. A French artist Daly designed this church. The church has been made in the shape of a cross. There are two spires of the church and each of the spires is about 50m high. The congregation hall is the longer part. The main hall has stained glass windows where the Birth to Death of Jesus is picturized. There is also an underground cemetery. Moreover, approaching the church by road feels like towering overhead touching the sky.

    Ans: The remains of Saint Philomena were undiscovered before 1802. She was from Greek. She was a consecrated virgin and martyred. At an early age, Philomena decided to take a vow. The vow which was to remain of her immaculate virginity. She was anguished to become the bride of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. But she refused the Emperor. Emperor Diocletian tortured her in different ways that all came to end in miraculous ways of healing. Finally, at the age of 13, Philomena was beheaded. She was venerable and blessed, and miracles were performed by God for her. All this dignity drove her to become a saint. That’s how Philomena became Saint Philomena.
