History

Only one (Swarga Vaasal) of the two (Rangavilasa) sections of the palace are claimed to have withstood Thirumalai’s grandson’s intervention. It is estimated that about one-fourth of the palace remains. Just thinking about it makes one wonder what a magnificent lineage the palace carries and how magnificent it would have been in those days.

Since its erection, Thirumalai Nayakar Palace has been the greatest building in South India. The monument is built in a combination of Dravidian and Islamic architectural styles. The palace’s original building was four times larger than what can be seen now. Many of the palace’s buildings were demolished throughout the eighteenth century. It’s famous for its colossal pillars, which stand up to 82 feet tall and 19 feet broad. When guests arrive, they are greeted with a large central courtyard encircled by round pillars and a circular garden. Swarga Vilasam and Ranga Vilasam are the names of the two portions of the palace.

The palanquin palace, royal bandstand, royal home, theatre, pond, garden, shrine, apartments, armoury, dancing hall, and quarters are all key components of the palace’s architecture.
