    History

The Temple is situated on the bank of the Karuvannur River, also known as Theevra River, and presently forms a part of the Canoli Canal, which connects Kozhikode and Kodungallur.
The local people tell an interesting legend about the origin of this river. When Lord Vishnu came to Vamana Avatar, then, the whole area was dry; he could not find water to wash his dirty lags. He used the water out of his Kamandalu and washed his legs by pouring the same. Since that time, the source of water has not dried, but it keeps flowing. It is now called Thriprayar.

It is one of the oldest Hindu temples in India and it has a rich heritage. The idol Lord Rama was initially worshipped by Lord Krishna at Dwaraka. After the swargarohana of Lord Krishna, the idol was dipped in the sea, later some fishermen got the idol from the sea near the Chettuva region of Kerala,  and the local ruler Vakkayil Kaimal constructed a temple at  Triprayer and installed the idol. The image of Rama resembles the Chaturbhuja Vishnu forms with four arms, holding a conch, a disc, a bow,  and a garland, respectively. The local people believed that this deity also possessed some aspect of Lord Shiva. When Lord Shiva killed Khara, the asura, he got both the Vaishnava and Shiva aspects. This is why the deity is also called Khara Samhara Moorthy.  Lord Rama is also known as Triprayarppan or Triprayar The idol Sree Rama is adorned with necklaces and other ornaments.
