Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu

Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu is a union territory in India The territory was constituted through the merger of the former territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. In July 2019 Plans for the proposed merger were announced by the Government of India, the necessary legislation was passed in the Parliament of India in December 2019, and on 26 January 2020 came into effect.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu are composed of four distinct areas located in Western India and Dadra is a small enclave within the state of Gujarat. Nagar Haveli is a C-shaped enclave located between the states of Maharashtra and Gujrat which contains a counter enclave of Gujarat around the village of Magical.

Language

The main languages of Dadra and Nagar Haveli include Gujarati, Marathi, Bhili, and Baldoni. Dadra and Nagar Haveli are sandwiched between the Indian States of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The influence of these regions on the Language of Dadra and Nagar Haveli is only natural.

Peoples

The main tribes are Dhodia, Varli, and Kokna with small groups of Koli, Cathode, Naika, and double scattered over the territory. The Dholias and Dubals are mainly confined to the Northern part of the territory whereas the Varlis and Koknas are found all over.

Jaikishan (SJ Music Duo) is one of the most famous people in this state.

History of Daman & Diu

Dadra and Nagar Haveli now with capital city Silvassa, in Western India. It was ruled by the Marathas till 1779. The 72 villages it comprises were offered to the Portuguese following a friendship treaty and Portuguese rule over the Union Territory lasted until August 2, 1954, and traces of it can still be found.

Tradition of Daman & Diu

The different types of tribal dances and folk of Dadra and Nagar Haveli include the Tarpa Dance, Bhagada Dance, Dohl Dance, and Tur and Thali Dance. Situated right opposite the Tribal Museum and the Church of Our Lady of Piety is one of the oldest churches in the region.

Cultural Foods Daman & Diu

Fish, Lobster, and crabs are the most in-demand delicacies for non-vegetarians. The majority of restaurants are popular for Gujarati and Portuguese cuisines and Punjab, Parsee, South Indian, and Chinese food are the other specialties of Diu.

Some of the famous dishes in this union territory are:

  • Butter-garlic tiger prawns.

How to reach Daman & Diu

By air: Silvassa does not have an airport and Surat Airport, situated 101 km away, is the nearest to the city.

By rail: The nearby Railway station is Vapi on Western Railway. Vapi is located about 18 Kilometers from Silvassa.

By road: Dadra and Nagar Haveli almost touch the National Highway 8 hr. between Delhi and Mumbai.
