    History

A powerful Bhanja King named Maharaja Harihara Bhanja discovered the city around 1400 A.D.  Then he named the city after himself. The King was searching for a place to secure safety close to the rivers, dense forests, and hills.  Bhanja King Vaidyanath Bhanja was successful in defending Mayurbhanj from the Mughal invasion.  A scion of the Bhanja dynasty named Raja Baidyanath Bhanja accepted the Vaishnava faith, which was initiated by Rasika Ray. That’s why he built an attractive temple inside the fort in honor of the God Rasika Ray’. Nowadays,  the palace is almost ruined, and the temple still stands as a testament to the Bhanja Kings. It’s the first brick-built religious cenotaph of that time, and it is still showcasing the beautiful masterhood. Maharaja Harihar Bhanja had chosen the place for his palace just because of its geographical surroundings. Because  Firoz Shah, the Muslim ruler of the Tughlaq dynasty, attacked Khiching in 1361. As the palace is surrounded by rivers on three sides,  he found it safe for his palace.
