    Jagannatha Temple, Baripada is located in Baripada in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. It is one of the significant religious sites of Mayurbhanj. Maharaja Baidyanath Bahnj built the temple in 1575, dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess  Subhadra. It is also known as the ‘Second Srikhetra’, after the famous Jagannath Temple, located in Puri. This temple also maintains the same rituals and architectural structure as the Jagannath Temple in Puri. The grand Rath Yatra has been celebrated here for over 500 years. However, the unique thing is that this Rath Yatra shows priority to female devotees who carry the chariot of Goddess Subhadra.

    Rath Yatra is the main attraction of Jagannatha Temple, Baripada. Because the Rath Yatra of Jagannath Temple is unique in style, it gives priority to the female devotees and gives them a chance to pull the chariot of Goddess Subhadra by earning it the name ‘Ma Subhadra Bije.’  Besides, the temple’s architectural structure is in Kalinga style. The inner walls of the temple are decorated with various paintings. Those paintings enhance the aesthetic and spiritual appeal of the temple. It attracts the devotees and shows the events from ancient Puranas. The temple has cultural significance.

    History

    Jagannatha Temple, Baripada has a long narrative history dating back to 1575 AD. It is also known as the Shri Shri Baladev Jew Bije Temple. The ruler of Mayurbhanj, Maharaja Baidyanath Bhanj, built the temple. There is a myth that once Maharaja Baidyanath Bhanj was denied entry to the Jagannath Temple in Puri. After being suggested by a divine vision, he built the temple due to a controversy over royal protocol. The temple is famous for its architectural structure, which reflects the Kalinga style, and it is also known as the ‘Second Srikhetra.’ The temple reflects the religious devotion of the Bhanja rulers. It has been an important spiritual center for over 500 years.

    Outside view : The outside view of the temple is charming and attractive because laterite stones are used to build the temple, and it is about 84 feet in height. The walls are decorated with intricate carvings, and there are also inscriptions on the wall that tell about the rich cultural heritage of Odisha. It is surrounded by a large boundary wall and vintage greenery. The environment is quite calm and peaceful. The main entrance is decorated with traditional sculptures and designs and welcomes the devotees and visitors. 

    Inside View : When you enter into the temple,  you can witness the idols of Lord Jagannath along with his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. The idols are magnificently designed with traditional attire and jewelry. The inner walls of the temple are designed with paintings that showcases the story from Ancient Puranas.  Here,  different kinds of rituals are performed daily in the presence of the devotees. The devotees offer flowers, fruits and sweetmeats to the Lord and they seek blessings from their devoted God.

    By air:  The nearest airport is Bhubaneswar AirportFrom here, you can hire a taxi ir local transport to reach there.

    By train: Baripada Railway Station is the nearest station to the temple.  It is only about 1.5 km away from the temple. From the station, you can hire a taxi or cab to get there.

    By road: Baripada Bus Stand is the nearest bus stand to the temple. It is only 2 km away from the temple. You can go to the temple on foot or by taking any local transport very easily.

    Tips for Travellers

    • The best time to go to Jagannath Temple is from November to February. During winter,  the weather remains comfortable and makes it suitable for outdoor activities. But if you want to participate in Rath Yatra festivals, you will visit in June or July.
    • Carry your necessary papers, passport, water bottles & medicines & energy drink.
    • Please wear traditional dresses as it’s a religious place. Don’t wear sleeveless and short tops.
    • Please put off your shoes before entering the temple. 
    • Try to get an update on the weather before going there.
    • Try to eat local cuisine and know their tradition. 
    • Remember to check local guidelines and respect the guidelines given by the temple authorities.
